Sam Deetjen
Scenic Designer
Howdy! I'm Sam Deetjen, a Cuban American designer and technician from Los Angeles, California! I've enjoyed drawing and sculpting since I was little, but didn't know I could use those skills and passions in a job until I was introduced to theatre when I was in fifth grade. Shortly after I got really into D&D and my obsession with world building began. I started to understand the historical significance of buildings and the world we live in and how it affects the atmosphere and tone of the scene.
Though this newfound love, I started to play with the expressive elements of fantasy and their historical context to create worlds that felt real and intertwined with the mystical. I also developed a love for the mysterious nature in fantasy, horror and sci-fi media. Through my acting training in both high school and at Fordham I learned how to think like an actor and director, highlighting movement, stage pictures and understanding subtext.
Soon, I found myself gravitating towards scenic design allowing myself to still think like an actor and utilize my passions for sculpting in tandem to understand how a scene moved and what the world would really look like. As I move forward I would like to continue to expand on my skills in these areas and my horizons by working in film and television and event design while also continuing to work in theatre.
